Pirates Prove Amusing Folks

Incidents Depicted In Pirates of Penzance Opera Prove Only That Life, Love and Ambition Are The Same

The advance sale for the "Pirates of Penzance,' 'an opera.. to be presented at East High auditorium tonight by all Waterloo talent as a special benefit for Presbyterian hospital, Indicates that every available seat "will be sold before the curtain rises on the Initial act. Final rehearsal for the production was held at East High last evening and everything is in readiness for the first call.

It is a safe prediction that the present production of "The Pirates of Penzance," always popular with "Waterloo lovers of the opera, will outclass anything seen on former occasions. The rehearsals have shown above all, that care has been exercises in selection of the cast, noticeable to a high degree in the work of those cast to play the leads. A Waterloo production with a local cast directed by local directors, the clever work of the Individuals, lead the observer entirely away from the hot that the work o£ amateurs is being witnessed. They are not amateurs but close students of the opera sacrificing time and study toward the perfection of the work they perform simply for the love of the thing.

"The Pirates of Penzance" is not the cold-blooded reproduction of the incidents of on age when everybody was supposed to carry about hearts of stone. "When the pirate profession was financially a paying one, these jolly old fellows did not have a theatre and the modern drama just around the corner for their entertainment when they left the need of a little Jollification of some sort. It was necessary for them to go out and make their own fun. They did so to their own satisfaction and patrons of the production tonight must admit I frankly that they did a fairly good job of It.

True -- they became a bit rough at times and perhaps more than one dagger carried in its sheath contains some dark secret of a ladylove fought over and bled for. But the victor was warm with his wooing of the fair one attested by the passion In the voice singing the songs of love to the pirate maid, and of her answer, also In Bong. "The Pirates o£ Penzance" are a jolly good bunch to become bettor acquainted with, each a. master in the particular caste in which they live and breathe in the stronghold on-the rough, rooky coast where, they flourished when the world was not so old' as at the Present time.
